At its Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple introduced iOS 7, the next iteration of its mobile platform. Dubbed by CEO Tim Cook as "the biggest change to iOS since the iPhone," the new operating system for the iPhone, iPod and iPad touts a brand new, transparent user interface, a colorful and flat design, and new features. New features include Control Center for quick access to settings, streaming service iTunes Radio, AirDrop file-sharing between iOS devices, video capture at 60 frames per second, and audio-only calling on FaceTime. iOS 7 will be released for the public in the fall.
What Else You Need To Know
- Changes in iOS 7 include a simpler design for all apps, a cleaner interface for built-in apps like Calendar, Mail, and Safari, a more transparent Notification Center now accessible from the lockscreen, and enhancements to Siri.
- As to multitasking, iOS 7 keeps track of usage and runs your most used apps in the background automatically, so that they launch for a split second when needed.
- Siri in iOS 7 will be able to control more elements and functions on the iPhone and will be using Microsoft's Bing (instead of Google) as search engine and will make full use of Wikipedia and Twitter.
- iOS's design overhaul was led by lead designer Jonathan Ive and engineering head Craig Federighi.
