Dutch company Fairphone, which has plans to build the world's first ethically sourced handset, has quickly obtained 5,000 pre-orders for its Android handset, giving the start-up sufficient funds to begin production. Fairphone last month started accepting pre-orders at 325 Euro ($430) with shipping slated in the fall. While the specs of the device are not top notch, its selling point is its construction: no materials are obtained from conflict zones, environmentally friendly components are to be used, and better working conditions will be provided to workers. Fairphone hit its pre-orders target with a full eight days left in its early funding campaign.
What Else You Need To Know
- The device features Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, 4.3-inch screen, a MediaTek quad-core processor, and a repleacable battery.
- Fairphone says the device will be made with materials from a completely transparent supply chain and won't be made by underage, underpaid laborers and workers under duress.
- The Fairphone handset will still be made in China but with better working conditions and wages.
