Got this phone three years ago on a Fido plan. Quite a basic phone that comes with the minimum a phone should carry. Good for a bit of music, a few snap shots, and the occasional game. First off, I found this phone to be quite sturdy , having dropped it a good number of time, yet it still worked like a charm. However, like all electronics, it does start to where out after a while. After several years of use the battery life is down to roughly half for stand-by, but talk time has been considerably reduced (One call and battery is almost dead). Also, having a large number of photos slowed the phone down quite a bit as well. I had a 1GB micro SD card that was roughly half full with pictures and I was unable to view the entire gallery, therefore resorting to plugging it in to my PC to remove the pictures. The design was a bit of a hit and miss. I found it be a little thicker than I would have liked, but it still felt good in my hands. The keys were moderately decent, texting wasn't a big issue, however from time to time it did feel as if i was hitting two keys at once. Like the title says: This was a good phone for its time, however with more advanced phones on the market, this one has become somewhat obsolete. Yet, I was quite satisfied with it nonetheless. Less

The Motorola W490 is a great phone....until it breaks. This has happened to me twice and the problem is exactly the same. After using the phone for 10 or 11 months, the keypad goes haywire. Flip the phone open and suddenly it will start dialing numbers at random or making menu selections, all without you pushing anything. Or you could be in the middle of a call and suddenly the phone will self-dial numbers at random, totally drowing you out with key tones and effectively ending your call. When this happened the first time, T Mobile replaced the phone because it hadn't been quite a year, so I was still under warranty. Again, everything about my new phone was great....until the very same problem happened again after about 10 months. So I'm on my third phone now! Since experiencing this problem, I have read other reviews across the Net saying that the W490 barely lasts a year, if you're lucky. I give it only 1 star because although it's a good phone when it works, it doesn't work as long as it should. Breaking down after just 1 year is pathetic, and to make matters worse, that's exactly when the warranty expires. Less

I would have loved to receive a unlocked GSM W490 Motorola phone. I was shipped something different because the vendor had the wrong item description for what they wanted to sell. After several emails to the vendor they realized their mistake and made me feel like it was my fault. They did refund my money and never did have a W490 to sell in the first place. I have purchased 2 phones from Amazon vendors in the past and have always received a phone for a different country that did not have all the functions that you would have if you bought the phone from T-Mobile or AT & T. I still say go to T-Mobile or AT & T. to buy a phone that works! Life is too short to put up with the Gray Market of cellular vendors! Note: I have purchased a phone that Amazon sold and it worked. I was forced to buy this phone. I am always a fan of NOKIA, well, selected NOKIA. I would rather spend hundreds of dollars to buy a cell phone with super-pleasing battery and memory card. My friends and families often lose me since it is out of power. I need to refill the battery at least twice per day since the very first time I started using this phone. However, I never chat with friends nor send messages. It is just for getting rutine things done. I even rarely call people or pick up the phone. It still BEEPS everyday to remind me that it NEEDS to be recharged...so the real goal to buy this phone is to do the recharging, right? It can only store 20 pictures. If you encountered some accidents or other emergency events and needed to take pictures, its tiny memory storage would kill you. DO NOT BUY IT unless you are very fund of leaving your phone at home. I've had this phone for one year and 2 months and like it just fine...until two days ago. I put my phone in the charger, woke up, and suddenly none of the keys worked when the software was running. If I take the battery out and put it back in, I have to hit the power button to turn the phone back on. Strangely enough, that works, but that's the only time any buttons do anything anymore. Once the software boots up, even the power button doesn't work, not even to power down the phone. I brought it to Tmobile today, and they told me I'm pretty much out of luck. I'm stuck in a contract for 10 more months and my phone is almost useless. It only has a one year warranty too - yippee, two months too late. All I can do with it is receive calls - answering them by flipping the phone open. That's why I'm on Amazon tonight, cause I need to buy a new phone ASAP, and I don't get the advantage of subsidies, since I'm in the middle of a contract. This is not an isolated incident, but, like any other issue, you don't know about it until it happens to you. Just Google something like, "W490 keypad does not work," and you'll see. It's common enough for google to have an autocomplete ready when you start typing that phrase. The forums are full of people like me, powerless to do anything but buy a new phone at full, shameful, price. Less

I got the phone free, and in hindsight I should have done some homework. Afterall, you get what you pay/or don't pay for right? Less

I've had the W490 for a couple of years now, and it has done everything I needed it to do, nothing more, nothing less. Call sound is clear and loud enough, even with the headset. The clamshell hinge is sturdy, rather than being the weakest link of many such phones. Battery life was very long until recently. The only bug I found was that I needed to remove the headset after each call, otherwise there was risk of calling back the last number for no apparent reason. No biggie. Sure, the Motorola OS is nothing lovely, but the calling and call log UI make sense, the address book makes sense, the alarm clock works fine and I can even set a calendar reminder if needed. Photos are passable for a mobile phone, but I didn't even want a cameraphone so again, no big deal. My parents even use this phone. Enough said. I work in Web and mobile technology. I don't need my phone to be ridden with the bugs and complexities that I see every day. This phone is not. I might just get it again if no one else is making anything like it. Less

Good Phone

To date this was my favorite phone (until someone stole it). I never had a dropped call, reception was good (on both ends) and battery life was much better than my previous phones (3-4 days between charges). I would have bought this exact same phone as a replacement but Fido no longer carries it in their stock.

F....., I still have one and half year to go with Fido plan..... W510 consummed my too much time, I would never wanna this crappy phone anymore. Less
