Cute appearance with high-end features

from CNET
The Motorola Karma QA1 has a great keyboard and a wide array of features like 3G speeds, a full HTML browser with Flash Lite support, GPS, stereo Bluetooth, and more. We also like the 3.5-millimeter headset jack, the quick access to Facebook and other social networks, and the excellent call quality. The Motorola Karma QA1 belies its cute appearance with high-end features that put it above just an ordinary messaging phone... Full review

I have been using this phone for exactly 1 year and I have been very happy with it. It is fairly compact and does not have the bulky feel of other phones with a full QWERTY keypad. The sound quality of voice conversations is superior to my old Nokia phone, but that may partially be because this uses the 3G network. The screen has good resolution and is a nice size for web surfing. It is not touch-screen, but I did not want that anyway. The built-in web browser is junk, but I was easily able to download and install a signed version of Opera Mini and use that as my primary web browser. Typing and texting is a breeze with the QWERTY keypad. Battery life seems to be pretty good. Although I charge it every night, it will last the whole day even with heavy use. The quality of the construction also seems pretty good, although I have only dropped it on softer carpeted surfaces. Camera quality is probably average to below average. I purchased a micro SD memory card so that I could store more pictures. I have not use the built-in GPS function since it has been locked by AT&T unless you pay an extra $10 per month. Moreover, I have not found a way to unlock the phone for free. Bluetooth works great. It also uses standardized micro USB and Overall, even though the phone does have a few weak points, I would highly recommend this phone if its features meet your needs. Less

I bought this phone for my daughter less than six months ago. For primarily texting, the phone was ok. As a telephone, the keyboard left something to be desired. Over the past 3 weeks, all of the screws holding the sliding mechanism in place have slowly backed out so the the phone is now in two pieces connected only by the ribbon cable. It has been subject to normal use and has not been dropped or suffered water damage. Apparently the '12 Month Warranty' does not actually extend to the handset. Both AT&T and Motorola have denied warranty coverage for what is clearly a manufacturing defect. Now I am left with a further 18-month commitment on an AT&T contract and no phone. When the phone was purchased, I thought that it appeared 'flimsy' but past experience with Motorola products made me think it must be well built. I was wrong. Less

When I was eligible for an equipment upgrade, I chose the Motorola Karma. I liked the form, the design and the fact that I could use a standard earbud to listen to music. The first Karma would intermittently freeze then reset itself at random intervals. AT&T replaced it with a refurbished Karma which after a month of use, simply froze with the AT&T logo on the screen and would do nothing else - not even power off. I called AT&T customer service, was assured by the very polite lady that my problem would be settled satisfactorily and am now awaiting delivery of a THIRD Karma, since switching to another phone would add $50 to my AT&T bill (the first Karma had come with a $50 rebate). Meanwhile, I am back to a 2 year old Nokia 6650 fold that is dependable, sturdy and just works. I am a middle-aged office worker. My cell phone is always in a stable, padded case unless it is in use. I never dropped, dunked or disassembled the phone. Because of the contract with AT&T (and my refusal to pay $50 for being gullible enough to believe Motorola's hype), I am stuck with a substandard and unreliable cell phone. I feel as though I've been swindled by Motorola AND AT&T. When my current contract is done (in two years, unfortunately) , I am through with AT&T and of course I will NEVER again purchase a Motorola product. Less

I am surprised nobody else has mentioned the cons

from Amazon
CONS: First off, the volume setting non-existent, meaning that you can't adjust for just the ringer, but only for the alerts in general. Second, unless I am just totally missing it, there is no option to edit the pre-set shortcuts list. Yes you can adjust the launch bar list, but most of the items i... More

Second, unless I am just totally missing it, there is no option to edit the pre-set shortcuts list. Yes you can adjust the launch bar list, but most of the items in the shortcuts list are useless to me. And finally, the alarm clock has to be enabled on a daily basis in order for it to work. PROS: The talk quality is pretty good, and the battery life seems to be above par. Less

When the keypad is locked and someone calls, you have to go through unlocking before answering, unlike every other phone I've had. You have to have your ear exactly over the tiny tiny speaker otherwise you can't hear ANYTHING, and my biggest gripe is that you CANNOT SEND VIDEO MESSAGES. You have to have a bluetooth connection which is totally inconvenient. Less

Good phone if you aren't phoning

Hi, THE GOOD: It's super easy to text. I got the phone and rapidly over-shot my text limit because it's just SO easy! Hi, THE GOOD: It's super easy to text. I got the phone and rapidly over-shot my text limit because it's just SO easy! It also has a smooth interface, the slide action feels good, the buttons are great, you can plug in normal headphones (via an 1/8" jack), and it's good at doing pretty much everything you need from a non-smart phone, except... THE BAD: It's not very good at actual calling. It's difficult to hear what the other person is saying because the phone suffers from voice fade and scrambling a lot of the time. And of course it doesn't use the standard data cables, so you have to go buy one. THE UGLY: The pictures online are deceptive: the icons really are not that big, the phone is really not that skinny, etc. The icons are big enough, the phone is skinny enough, I just don't like the deception. OVERALL: This phone is a huge step up from the sliver/razer. I'm not a big fan of using all the data services and the social networking, I got the phone to do 2.5 things: (1) make calls, (2) send texts and (2.5) play games on the toilet. The phone sucks at #1 (unfortunately), rules at #2, and #2.5 is pretty irrelevant, isn't it? Less

The only downer is the video quality, its not as good as other motorola's. Also the battery life kind of blows. You can change the setting from 3G to 2G and it will last longer. My favorite phone I bought. Not so great video and picture...HOWEVER has a great light on it....for all you night video voyeurs out there. Less
