- This is a review of the i355 and NOT Nextel service practices!! I LOVE this phone. I finally upgraded to this model last year from my i315 (my husband is still using his three year old i315) and its a great phone. I think its looks neat, but I didn't choose it for its looks. I get teased because of its size, people assume its ancient or an incredibly cheap prepaid phone. However, the performance quickly impresses everyone. I have received calls where NO ONE can get service (radiology labs, deep basements and in the middle of the woods) and the "off the grid" Direct Talk feature has been excellent. I really like the way the i355 can stand upright. Its easy to use one handed when hiking, biking, hunting, fishing and camping in ALL the elements and wearing gloves. We play hard and the winters here are cold and wet and the phones have been totally unaffected. The teeny little flip phones are cute, but cute doesn't seem to be very sturdy. I chose this model because as FUN and handy as having a cell phone can be, the fact is when the chips are down and I need a phone for my personal safety, I want a phone that is up to the task. After a car wreck and your hands are shaking, no one cares how THIN a phone is, just how well its working. And if a cell phone isn't sturdy enough to work when you need it to, what's the point of having it??? Less

I've had the i355 now for about 3 months and here are my thoughts: Pros -Very sturdy, I'm not sure there is a more rugged phone on the market -Feels good to use and dial numbers. I'd prefer slightly larger buttons but this phone has way easier to hit numbers than a lot of phones out there and even when I shove it in my pocket the buttons don't usually get pressed because they are stiff - you have to mean it when you push them. -Nice loud ring -Pretty good battery life -Sound quality can be good but varies quite a bit. I think it has more to do with coverage than the phone's hardware. Coverage is OK for me in Northern MN but probably not the best available. Cons: -The software on the phone. I thought the idea of this big rugged phone was to have just a simple rock solid tool for making phone calls, but the menus and software on the phone don't reflect that. The phone book is overly complicated. There is no simple alarm you can set (you can enter a "meeting" with an audio reminder but it's a lot of work). There is no basic calculator. The T9 text entry seems messed up at times. And the menu features are just overly complicated for this industrial use phone. -I want to be able to glance over at my phone and see if I've got a signal, good battery, any missed calls without having to pick the darn thing up and push a button to illuminate it. The color LCD screens on almost every phone on the market today are too hard to see without illumination and it drives me nuts. So Motorola if you are listening, 2 changes for you: Really simple software including a basic phone book, alarm clock, calculator and good text entry features. And a good old fashioned monochrome LCD that can be seen at all times!!!! This phone is a tool, not a toy!!! Less

This is not your typical pocket phone. It is big, heavy, durable and ugly. That said...it is exactly what I was looking for. After going through several flip phones that fell apart on me, I wanted something that would stand up to some abuse. This phone can handle being tossed around a little and still funtion. It is the most robust cell phone I have seen and feels more like a small military radio than a cellphone. Also, it is unlikely that it will get stolen if left around because it's so darn ugly. Service from Sprint/Nextel, on the other hand is terrible. My previous phone was a Sprint flip phone that completely fell apart before my contract expired. I visited a Sprint store, purchased the i355 and renewed my contract for 2 more years. A month later, I was billed for both the old and new contract. When I asked them what I need to do to close the old contract (Sprint store said they would do that for me) I was told to purchase a new phone and renew my contract (exactly what I did at the Sprint store). It has been several months now and I am still fighting with them over the double charges. Bottom line...I love the phone but wish there was a way to own it without going through Sprint/Nextel. Less

Why can't they make it for Cingular?!?!

Cingular's Motorola V557 gets dents and dings on it if you make a mean face at it. Why can't Motorola make the i355, or at least a phone built to the same tough standards, for Cingular? If you're on Nextel and drop your phone a lot or bump it around in your briefcase or backpack, buy the i355. Less

I work for a local trucking company as a driver, and I drive a dedicated shuttle. However, this means that I am constantly dropping one trailer and hooking to another. I am exposed to ALL of the ellements. This phone, and it's older brother, the i305, are tougher than tough. Manufactured to military standards for toughness, the phones will withstand just about everything except for an 80,000 pound tractor-trailer running over it. We had one phone that did get run over and it still worked (the LCD screen broke, so the contact list could not be accessed, but it would receive and make calls fine). We had another phone that got dropped during a storm, and it stayed submerged in a deep puddle for about an hour before it was found, and it still worked. These phones have been dropped from 6 to 8 feet up, bounced off fuel tanks and battery compartments, kicked, slammed, sat on, leaned against, and in general sent through electronic h*ll. They keep working. We have had no problems with Nextel's service and repair work. If a phone goes down, we have a replacement within 24 to 48 hours. Of course, we've purchased the optional insurance (which the complainer below probably did not). I was so pleased with the ones at work that I bought one for myself. I had a Spr*nt phone, and I called customer service because I was elligible for my 2 year trade up credit. They rolled my accout over from Spr*nt to Nextel with no hassel, applied my credit to the new phone, and I had my new i355 less than 24 hours after I called. The stores won't do this. You must call Spr*nt and deal with them directly. The contrast with the LCD screen isn't the greatest in daylight, so it is a little hard to see, but not so bad that it is unusable. If the phone is tilted in just the right way, the screen is actually quite readable. This was an anticipated problem and therefore does not factor into my 5 star rating. Less

I had been very happy with my Motorola phone until the battery started losing its charge within a day, even when the phone was turned off. The friendly but incompetent customer support kept me on the phone for an average of 40 minutes for the repeated calls trying to figure out the problem. After the phone had finally been sent to their technical service center, they returned it to me that the phone was irreperable "due to customer abuse." I have done nothing to that phone that could have caused any damage (unless using it to make phone calls counts as "customer abuse"), but got the same comment, without explanation after I had sent the phone in for a second time for reevaluation. It seems that Motorola is just trying to get out of fixing or replacing the phone free of charge under warranty. You'll be fine with a Motorola phone as long as it works. After that, you're on your own. Less

We do all of our "paperwork" with these phones. We open and close jobs, do equipment swaps, get directions to houses etc. And they are strong phones. The shell is almost rubberized. I would probably think different if this was my personal phone though, they're big and heavy but I don't feel I have to be gentle with it. For work, I highly recommend it. Less

My problems with nextel did not stop when I canceled my service. I will get to the problems with the service. When I went to get a new phone a day before my contract expired, I of course wanted to keep my number. So as I went to get my Cingular phone (highly recommended), I had the old number switched to my new number. Today, I get in the mail my nextel statement for the month with a $200 early termination even though I had not canceled my service, but had simply got a new phone and switched my number over. This was on icing on the cake after 2 years of absolutely amazingy bad service from nextel. In my town, not a small town by any means, there are very few places that have any service. In the largest subdivision, you cannot get service anywhere. I constantly get comments from people trying to reach me that get the classic nextel line...Please hold while the nextel subscriber you are trying to reach is located. Most of the time I would not even recieve incoming calls, calls would go straight to my voice mail. Not only would I not get the calls, but often I would not even get the voice mails until days or even weeks later. When I did actually take calls (and call out), I cannot count the number of times I've had my call dropped. I recieved so many different error messages sometimes I wonder if they just spend all their time at nextel thinking of different error messages to program into their phones. That brings me to the selling point of nextel, the famed and well-loved direct connect feature. This is an absolute joke. Direct connect only works MAYBE half the time I tried to use it. Even then, in the middle of the conversation I would be greeted by the loud beep of my phone telling me I wont be talking to that person anymore. Of course, I would expect nothing less from the nextel network. Text messaging with nextel is next to impossible. If it did not take hours to send or recieve a message, it took days, or maybe didn't even come at all. The internet access was fine, it the rare instance that it worked. Of course, when you don't have service, you don't get the internet access either. I was constantly getting the message "network not available". Calling and trying to complain to nextel is futile. Trying to get through to customer service takes forever and once you get through they do nothing. My experience with nextel has been nothing short of a disaster and I write this trying to warn anyone considering nextel. Stick with Verizon or Cingular and you will be much happier in the end. Don't make the same mistake I did. Less
