The "1-Minute" Review

In truth the range of mobile phones which have actually been designed specifically for kids is very disappointing. The LG Migo VX1000 was one such device with four number keys and parental control options but it has been discontinued (although you can probably find one on eBay).

Don't Love It

When I was younger (about 11) I got this phone because my mom wanted me to be able to call in emergencies, but didn't want her 11 year old having a 'real' cell phone. It was good for just calling her, dad, home and my aunt (you can only program 4 numbers plus 911), but I found it un-useful for that reason. I couldn't even call my bus to see if it was late without re-programming in a number! It is a good phone for little kids, I guess, but even when I was a pre- teen it was a major inconvenience because I couldn't just call people if I needed to. Now I'm older and I gave my Migo to my little sister, who is 10. Something is wrong with it- It will barely turn on (goes to the LG display and then freezes), it never stays in service, even in the city, and it won't make calls very often. It's lucky if it even turns on all the way, but why won't it stay in service when it did before? This phone is good for young people at first, but I find it's starting to develop problems and isn't useful for an older child. Less

The phone is great for our 9 year old. It is used with Telus and the gps works both on our computer and my cell phone. You have to pay a rate plan - share 10 is the cheapest at $10.00 per month. Then there is the "kid find" fee of $5.00 per month. Add $6.95 monthly system access fee and $0.50 per month 911 charge. So close to $25.00 a month; still not bad for peace of mind. The cost is an issue with the provider not the phone. The phone works well and when we get our next "free" phone on her account at the end of 3 years, we may update to a "real" phone provided she doesn't abuse the one she has. If the "real" phone has a GPS in it we can still "kid find" her, but it also sends a text message to the phone that we have used it. The battery lasts about a week on standby. I have used the gps to discover whether she has left her phone at school or it's in the house. All in all a good product. 10 for the phone 5 for the provider. Less

Good phone-GPS tracking! Every child should have one

I got this phone for my 9 year old daughter and think it is just the right thing. I love it. I read a prior review alleging that this phone doesn't have GPS tracking capability. That is just not so. I bought this phone specifically to track my daughter due to a volatile custody issue. I can use either my computer or my blackberry or even the companion "parent" cell phone to see where she is, speed & direction of travel, etc. etc. I can also get the service where I can be notified if she leaves a certain preset area. It is incredibly accurate. This phone brings a lot of peace of mind. I have trained my daughter that it is her lifeline and she should have it with her at all times. She likes it but obviously would like an adult phone more. At least with this phone I know she is calling all the right people! WIth the state of the world these days I think every child should have one. Pamela Less

After deciding my daughter needed a cell phone for communication and emergencies, we debated between this one and the Firefly. We have Verizon's service already. We decided to go with the Migo. We explained everything to my daughter (who is 7) and programmed only other Verizon customers (like me, her step-dad and her uncle) so no minutes would ever be used. We didn't give out her phone number to anyone and talked to her about not answering calls she doesn't know. She's had it for about 6 months now and it's worked out wonderfully! She loves it and uses it often. Our majour turn off with the Firefly was that you had to purchase minutes for it. And they would expire if not used. This one we just added to our plan and restricted the calls to the IN network. I highly recommend this phone. Less

GREAT Product! I have peace of mind that my 5 year old daughter can call me at anytime. Her phone allows me to track her location from a computer or my cell phone. LOVE IT! If the bus is late at dropping the kids off, I call her Or best of all track her with the Chaperone feature right from my cell phone. Chaperone is the best thing they ever came out with for knowing where your children are at all times. The Chaperone system works fine. Not perfect but, is good enough till the system improves on exact locations. Right now it only gives you around a location address with map which is good enough for now. The phone connection is very good and never drops. I worry about everything like most parents and this phone really helps the parent have peace of mind that the child is OKAY. 4 and 5 year olds can use this phone easily with no troubles. Get one, It will save you from worrying and best of all let the child call you when they need to. It is only $9.99 a month with the family plan. My daughter loves this phone and even at 5 years old she is so responsible with it. It is her new security blanket that she will not go anywhere with out it Less

But the design of the phone is a little toy-like and there aren't many cases or skins for the phone. I think the firefly has a much cuter design. It's a great way to stay in touch with your parents and, unlike other kids phones, you can have up to 4 numbers instead of 2. To call other people you have to punch in a pin number, which is kind of a pain. All in all the Migo is a great phone for 7-10 year old kids. Less

I laughed when I read a previous reviewers review that said his child programed the phone. I thought, "surely, he couldn't have!" Well, our Migo arrived last week. My son, who just turned 7, RE-programmed the phone with his 1st grade classmates phone numbers!! So yes, if they have access to the manual, or know the code, it's not hard to do at all!! With that said, I must add that I DO love this phone. For just $9.99 a month, my son can call me whenever he likes. He clips it inside his backpack or on his jeans depending on where he is! My son is never far from my side, but I guess I like having him know he can reach me anytime he wants!! Less
