“We all know the target demographic that T-Mobile myTouch is attempting to attract, and surely enough, it’s not those who are looking for the latest and greatest. Naturally, we can complain about its outdated Android 2.3 Gingerbread experience, and various performance hiccups but for those who can tolerate them, they’ll still be presented with all the rich features attached with Android. Factoring its attractive $49.99 on-contract price point, there’s enough value found in the Huawei-made myTouch to make it a decent entry-level offering – just don’t expect to find it as gracious with its performance over other offerings. Did we mention that we’re impressed with its build quality, considering this is something from Huawei?”

“Though T-Mobile's method of naming its phones leaves something to be desired, Huawei's MyTouch is consistent with the rest of its family members. Just like the others, it comes with tons of bloatware and, despite being a recent addition to the line, runs on an older version of Android, version 2.3 Gingerbread. However, this device still offers respectable call quality, photo quality (putting aside the wonky white balance), and network speeds for a reasonable price -- again, just like its kin. Furthermore, of all the MyTouches I've seen (excluding the keyboard versions), Huawei has the best and sleekest design, which gives this entry-level device that extra edge over the others.”

Phone Scoop
Phone Scoop

“The Huawei myTouch is a fine little phone. It doesn't aim to beat the leaders of the smartphone pack, and are instead gunning to place well in their bracket. It does. The hardware is conservative and shies away from being flashy. That simply means this phone won't stand out in a crowd. I like the hardware. Basic features, such as the screen, battery, signal performance and sound quality, were very good, with the exception of the speakerphone. Every feature I tested on the myTouch worked as it should without problems. Some of the software is a bit finicky and has odd limitations, but overall the phone gets the job done. Taken as a whole, Huawei did a commendable job with the myTouch. Perhaps the biggest detractor is the fact that this phone won't be updated to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Sure, that may not matter to first-time smartphone buyers, but for some it could be enough reason to pick another device.”

In Depth

Not all phones need to pack the latest, high-end features in order be appealing. Consider the Huawei Ascend G312, a.k.a. the T-Mobile MyTouch smartphone. It’s a nifty little mid-range model with fairly average specs that uses Android 2.3 Gingerbread as the default operating system. It’s not about to dethrone the likes of the iPhone or the Samsung Galaxy S III, but then again, it doesn’t have to. In fact, it isn’t even trying.

The G312 is plenty useful as it is. Its main features include a 4-inch WVGA touchscreen display, a 1.4GHz Qualcomm Scorpion processor, 512MB of RAM, and 2GB of internal storage. It packs enough hardware to let users experience and enjoy most of what the Android platform has to offer. Plus, it makes up for some of its shortcomings with good call quality and acceptable camera performance.

All things considered, this model offers a balanced feature-set without any show-stopping drawbacks.

According to CNET's battery drain test, the phone lasted for 7.5 hours. With minimal use (a short conversation here and there, watching some videos, and taking a handful of pictures), the handset lasted a couple of days without a charge and with only about a fourth of its battery drained. But with heavy use, especially with the brightness turned on and lots of calls made, it easily required a good charge during the day. Read more Huawei Ascend G312 reviews.
