I've had this phone for about a year and a half now and I must say it has a learning curve and hidden features that people do not find which results in some of the more negative reviews here. I'm just gonna go over some of the myths/misconceptions. Yes, You can set custom ringtones/alerts for text messages. I have done it before its just a matter of putting in a bit more work using the mp3 trimmer. Use the task manager to avoid the freezing issues. You can find it in the start menu and it is incredibly easy to use. Simply close the programs that you are not using on the phone and there you go. The lock function is actually a lot simpler than people are making it out to be. All you need to do is hold down the hang up button (red one on the right) and the phone locks. And then just follow the instructions to unlock it. I can easily send a text and lock/unlock my phone without even looking at it. My only complaints are the OCCASIONAL freeze which only happen once every few months for me because ive figured out how to use the phone properly. Also, it can lag quite a bit if there are too many programs open but task manager takes care of that. Also, the camera won't work if too many programs are open which becomes a bit frustrating sometimes Overall, i think this phone is great. The learning curve is a bit of a turn off but it is the people who return it too early that give bad reviews. The HTC S640 just needs a fighting chance. Less

Loved It

I'm surprised by the reviews a lot of people have expressed. I haven't had any bad things happen to my S640. The only thing is that the battery does heat up when on the phone too long. I love this phone and wish I didn't lose mine to waterdamage. I love how the scroll wheel was on the side and the qwerty keyboard. As small as others said it was, I had no problem with it. Great phone seeing as how you can set your own ringtones and can hold a LOT of texts. Less

Not impressed either!

Worked okay for a few weeks...then: -battery lasted only 6-8 hours and would really heat up during conversations. Got a new battery-doesn't heat up but still discharges fast. -web crashes when viewing large pages -buttons freeze often -random shutdowns, even with a full charge -dropped calls -doesn't let you know about voicemails you have received for a couple days -the amount of pressure you need to use on the buttons and how long you need to hold them to enter information, varies ...I've only had this phone for two months! My wife's Blackberry has been flawless, that's what I'm getting! Less

Not impressed

I'm on my second S640... the first unit would hold a battery charge for about 4 hours.... second one provided by Telus will go just about 24 hours on a 100% charge. This is even with minimal use (wifi turned off). Another annoying thin is the keys are too small and close together. Given what I've e...More

Both my wife and I bought this phone from Telus last June. It was working fine for both of us until a couple months ago when my wifes started having what seems to be common issues with this phone (freezing, screen going white and multi-color and then not working at all). Mine just recently did the same thing. My wife already got a refurbished one, and guess what? Yep....no more then a month or so later she's having the same problems again!!! I'm waiting for my refurbished one to come in, but we are looking around at other phones and other providers because our current company won't give us different phones. I would suggest you avoid this phone at all costs, the so-called benefits definitely don't outweigh the major issues with this phone. Less

Terrible investment

Since the third month I had this phone it's been nothing but a problem. I experienced all the same problems mentioned above; screen freeze, turning white and having to take the battery out, low battery life. I will definitely invest in something of higher quality like a blackberry next time... this phone was absolutely a mistake.

The phone is ok, but the battery life is brutal. I have had it for 5 months, so I have had a fair amount of time to use it. I have it set to have a Hotmail "push" account and Imap another account once every 2 hours. I would be lucky to get 2 days out of the battery. I would be a lot happier with the battery life of the BB Curve inside this unit. Having to hack to get the GPS to work, as well as the usual freezing with Windows mobile makes me luke warm on this phone. The call answer and hang up buttons are placed retarded, and usually make it so you always answer a call even if you do not want to. Bottom line, I am looking for a different phone if the price is right. I would recomend Blackberry Curve over this phone. Less

Bought this phone less than 2 month ago and screen keep freezing up and turning multicolors on me. Had to take battery out to unfreeze and get working, then went to charge and the screen blew inside. Telus is now saying there was damaged caused by me and refuses to replace. We even bought the extended warranty and they will not honor it. Very angery, 3 year contract no phone, and do not want to purchase another phone to work with the plan. Buyers beware of this problems. Less

I researched other phones, and ended up with the HTC S640. Here is why: - Windows mobile - easy to work with Word, Excel, PowerPoint - WiFi - Super Easy to add email addresses - Full Qwerty keyboard - Super Easy Navigation - Just an all round great interface - Love how easy it is to sync to get my contact lists updated - great picture quality on still and video Things that are not great but liveable: - When I lock my phone via the power button menu, it will freeze and I have to reset it by removing the battery - I wish the battery lasted a little longer - but I could upgrade it Less
