The Blackberry Cranberry Pearl by RIM looks impressive with its sleek form and glossy cranberry finish. It looks a lot like a cell phone, which will help it to attract a wider audience than just business users. The new slimmed down construction makes it a lot easier to slip into a purse or pocket and makes it feel quite comfortable to hold up to your ear for phone calls. It comes with an exceptional 2.25-inch TFT screen that can display 65,000 colours at a 240x260-pixel resolution. It also offers a 1.3-megapixel camera with a flash and 5X zoom. Unfortunately, it is not a touch screen, but it does offers a very sharp and clear display which is great for viewing e-mails, pictures, and web sites plus many of the other great functions you come to expect with a Blackberry.
A possible drawback of the Blackberry Cranberry Pearl is the SureType keyboard. The SureType keyboard is based on the traditional QWERTY type of layout but with fewer keys. As you start to enter the letters of a word, it will present you with a list of possible words and you need to pick the correct one. For some users this could turn out to be a little frustrating and slow. The advantage to using this style of keyboard of course is to keep the unit small and compact and so there has to be some concessions to achieve this. Another unfortunate aspect to the design is that the MicroSD card slot is located behind the battery. This can be really inconvenient because you have to have to take the battery out to access it. The sound quality does not have a crystal clear sound as you would have with some phones and voices tend to sound a bit digitized at times.
Overall, the Cranberry Pearl is undeniably a significant step forward for RIM. It is a small, compact yet multi-functional smart phone. Its sleek design will make it appealing to many potential new users that otherwise may not have been interested in getting a Blackberry.
