Yet another solid BlackBerry that belongs on every e-mail addict’s wish list

from Laptop Magazine
The 7290 sports a tweaked version of the QWERTY keyboard that helped put BlackBerry on the map. The familiar side-mounted thumbwheel is there, but it's a matter of taste whether it's more user-friendly than the center-mounted, five-way navigation key found on many other smart phones. The screen has a much brighter backlight than the 7290's predecessors, but the resolution and colors are weak compared to most other smart phones... Full review

Strong email, calendar and contact management in a tough and pocket-able form

from Mobile Tech Review

If you're looking to loose your phone and PocketPC or Palm powered PDA in exchange for a Blackberry, you may be disappointed, especially if you're any kind of power user; you'll miss the MP3 player, the word processor and the ability to load up fancy GPS software. If you plan to keep your mobile phone but need to add remote email and calendaring to your life and especially if you're the type that buys technology for the job rather than for fashion then you're in luck; the Blackberry offers strong email, calendar and contact management in a tough and pocket-able form that doesn't need a tech... BB Curve vs BB 7290

I just bought the 7290 from the Tigerdirect website. With shipping I paid just under 120 dollars. I had been using the BB Curve for work and I liked it so I thought I would pick up the 7290 for personal use. I actually prefer the 7290's thumb wheel vs the curve's pearl roller in the center. The 7290 is obviously bigger than the curve but I have big hands and I actually find the 7290 more comfortable to type on. The curve's display screen is much brighter and the resolution is much better so if you are planning on using the device for facebook or for looking at pictures on line the 7290's resolution isn't the best so don't expect too much from it on that end. But i did hop on facebook and was satisfied with the speed of sending messages and wall posting. The one big downfall of the 7290 is the back light. Out of the box the unit has a back light activation button ( also its power button ) that you have to push each time you want to illuminate the screen. However there is a free program on sourceforge's website called BBlight which you can easily install on the unit and set it to activate the back light any time you push a button or use the scroll wheel. Reception on the two phones are comparable. Both are quad band and I havent had any problem with dropped calls on either units. They also both offer blue tooth so if you have a hands free device in your car you are good with both. The 7290 does not have a speaker phone which is nice if you do a lot of conference calling or webinairs but you can pick up a blue tooth device or a headset if you need hands free operation. Overall I am satisfied with what I got for what I paid. If you are looking for a mulitmedia phone that save up some money and get a curve or an iphone. If you are a business professional on the go and you are looking for an entry level priced phone the 7290 will do everything you need it to and maybe even exceed your expectations just a little. Less

Cannot Recommend 7290

I would not recommend this phone. I bought mine used on Ebay because I thought Blackberry was a good product. It worked fine for about 2 weeks and now it chronically drops calls and says there is no service. I don't know if this is the fault of T-Mobile, my carrier, or not. I put my SIM card in another phone and it shows 5 bars. The address book is really clunky. It takes too many steps to get where you want. The web page support does not seem to answer many questions. You need a "patch" to fix the Daylight Savings Time problem with the calendar. Less

Strengths: Significant built-in memory, Easy synchronization for email access, Quad-band GSM, Bluetooth connectivity Weaknesses: Resolution not the greatest, Difficult location of SIM card Using experience: 25 Days I bought this phone as an unlocked device and for its versatility. Being Quad-band, this can be used throughout the world. It has sufficient memory but lack of support for additional memory in the form of memory cards is a draw-back as compared to most of other smartphones. It is easy to use for email access. Synchronization is certainly very simple. Location of SIM card underneath the battery compartment makes it cumbersome to access that. Less

This is the worst so “called” phone I have seen they became part of our day to day life. Luckily I don’t own one but unfortunately due to my work requirements I have to use one paid for by the company. Only in last 16 months I had to replace it 3 times ?!?! Now the latest one goes blank from time to time but it comes back after few minutes. Interesting thing is that all of them had different problem. I have asked our IT guy if I should ask for new model but he said that he can not see much improvements except ist is better in design. I must say that I am very disappointed that phone like this carries logo made in Canada. RIM guys should wake up before it is too late. Less

I bought a Philips Bluetooth earpiece at Fry's to complement it ($15.00), and the reception is superb. The Cingular coverage in L.A. is excellent and I never drop any calls. With backlight, the screen couldn't be any brighter (one big difference over the dimly-lit 7280). Syncing with either Outlook or ACT! is a child's play. Best smart phone I've ever had, by far. True, no MP3 or camera, but, hey, this is a business machine. Less

terrible phone.

from Amazon
I hoped a phone combo would eliminate having to carry a phone and PDA looking like Batman's Bat Belt. The phone sucks - breaks up and message notices arrive often a day after the call. This is now a very old unit. I will see if an upgrade means better phone or do I hold out for the mac phone?

Unlike the writer of the review before me, I found the Black Berry device very easy to use and very functional. I would have to say to "that" reviewer that BlackBerry expect potential users to be at least average intelligence and also be able to read and write English If they have a English equipped model. The quick start guide is all you need to read to get started and navigate around this device and I found I could configure it and learn to use it just by using it basically. Many users will buy a Crack Berry for the the Push email facility and once set up is excellent. Opening attachments is straight forward. As a phone I did find the volume to be a bit low and it does miss having mp3 ring tones and a camera. I use it with a Mac running 10.4.6 and synch it to Entourage using Pocket Mac. This functionality turns it into a great Life/business organizer. Its a bit bulky and not very stylish but this is a business phone after all and I have to give it top marks as such. Less
