8.4/10
Informr score
The Asus Zenfone 7 Pro currently has an Informr score of 8.4 out of 10. This score is based on our evaluation of 21 sources including reviews from users and the web's most trusted critics.

What's good

  • Great selfie camera
  • Excellent display
  • Long-lasting battery
  • Lots of features on the front-facing camera

What's bad

  • Expensive
  • Heavy and awkward
  • No wireless charging
  • No headphone jack

The Asus Zenfone 7 Pro aims to join the top-ranking phones while one-upping the competition with its flip cameras and night-mode selfies. But is it the other way around and a decent camera strapped to a sub-par phone?

Design

The phone's most notable design feature is the flip-top cameras that allow for more precise shots and what reviewers called the best selfie in the smartphone world.

Aside from that, the design is sleek and on-par with most smartphones of its class. It’s nearly bezel-less, and with the fingerprint scanner being on the power button, that means it’s all screen. However, it is a large phone, and reviewers stated it was top-heavy and noticeably heftier than the average smartphone nowadays.

Display

The Asus Zenfone 7 Pro has a big beautiful screen. Coming in at 6.67-inches, the screen is uninterrupted by cut-outs and with barely a bezel in sight. Reviewers gushed about the size as well as the color and sharpness of the display with enough brightness to be seen even on the sunniest of days.

Android Police says, “The Zenfone 7's 90Hz OLED screen is gorgeous with the kind of vibrant colors we’ve come to expect from modern OLEDs, and a maximum brightness more than suitable for usage in the sun.”

Performance

With the most up-to-date chipset and a hardy amount of space, the Zenfone 7 Pro can run just about anything. Asus’s gaming software also allows for performance optimizations while gaming. Reviewers said it seemed as though there wasn’t anything they couldn’t put the phone up to.

Software & Storage

The Zenfone 7 Pro runs Android 10 with an overlay called The ZenUI 7. Reviewers said it was the smoothest performing overlay from Asus yet. Storage comes in at a whopping 256GB and is expandable up to 2TB with MicroSD.

Cameras

The cameras are where the Asus Zenfone 7 Pro pulls ahead of the pack. With its flippable camera tray and its other added features and tweaks, reviewers stated that it was the best selfie they had with a phone.

Night mode is also a significant drawing point, making selfies possible in low light with surprising clarity.

Asus even considered durability in their camera design. To prevent possible damage to the camera's flip feature, the camera automatically retracts the moment your phone starts dropping.

Battery Life

Battery life with the Asus Zenfone 7 Pro seems to be outstanding. With a 5,000mAh battery, it packs plenty of battery life. Reviewers boasted it was more than enough to get you through the day and then some.

Audio

Audio is not often a strong suit with phones. The Asus Zenfone 7 does nothing to buck this trend. You’ll get stereo audio from a downward-facing speaker and an earpiece speaker, but reviewers noted that it didn’t have much bass or balance. At louder volumes, it sounded as if it echoed. There isn’t a headphone jack either, so be prepared to use Bluetooth headphones or find an adapter for that.

Specs at a Glance

  • Glass and aluminum chassis
  • 6.67-inch AMOLED 90Hz display
  • Octa-core 3.1 GHz Qualcomm SM8250 Snapdragon 865 processor
  • 8GB of RAM
  • Android 10
  • 256GB plus MicroSD expansion slot for storage
  • 64MP camera
  • 5,000mAh battery

Bottom Line

There’s a lot to be excited about when it comes to the Asus Zenfone 7 Pro. It has a lot of the features and abilities you’ve come to expect from any smartphone in its class, plus a little extra.

If you are a fan of selfies and low-light photography, the Asus Zenfone 7 Pro might be a done deal. But while it works well in other areas, the novelty of the camera setup is the only thing that sets this phone apart from other smartphones.

Tech Radar states, “The Asus Zenfone 7 Pro is an impressive flagship phone with a triple rear camera array that flips around to the front to improve your selfie game. While it won’t outdo the best photography-focused phones on the market, the top-tier specs make this phone competitive with, if not a step ahead of, most other flagships on the market. Just don’t expect it to handle water or dust well.”

Overall image quality is satisfying and the ZenFone has no trouble producing good-looking photos under most conditions. But the competition at the top is fierce: missteps in the handling of high dynamic range scenes, significant artifacts, and a problematic bokeh mode drag the score down compared to...

Though at €799 for the Pro variant, Asus' pricing isn't as aggressive as it used to be. It's still cheaper than the Galaxy lineup this year, but it's no longer the clear bargain last year's $500/€500 Zenfone 6 was. We probably have 5G support to thank for the price hike. Still, if you're looking for...
