Why does gallery backup occupy too much memory?

I am a first time Android user and I am using the Xiaomi Redmi 3S. My problem is that the Gallery backup occupies a lot of space on my SD Card ( File explorer < SD Card<MIUI< Gallery

Did you download any videos? Some downloaded videos may not show up on the gallery. You might want to try going to Settings > Apps > Gallery > Clear cache. Let me know if that frees up space.
