How can you stop the error message "Error: Cannot make a data call while making a voice call" from appearing during the start and completion of a phone call on the Audiovox SMT 5600?

I have an Audiovox SMT 5600 that when you place a call it gives an error message "Error: Cannot make a data call while making a voice call", The message appears again upon completion of call. Can any tell me what is going on and is there a fix for this? I feel something must have been turned on, but don't know what. Thanks!
