Phone Service Questions

1. Where can I call with my cell phone?

Your cell phone can call anywhere that a wired phone can call providing your call originates in an area where you have service. Some service providers disable international calling as a security feature but you can request that this service be activated.

2. Why do many carriers require 1, 2, or 3 year contracts?

Carriers generally require a long term contract because they have heavily subsidized the price of the phone and need to re-coup the cost over the 12, 24, or 36 monthly payments you make.

3. Can I cancel my service contract at any time?

Yes. You can cancel your service at any time, however, be sure to review the terms and conditions of your service contract. You may incur penalties if you break your contract early.

4. Can I change my service plan?

Most carriers will allow you to switch to a different plan before the end of a contract, however, some restrictions may apply. Contact your carrier for more information.

5. Can I have two phones with the same number?

No.

6. Can I trade in or upgrade my phone?

You can upgrade your phone at anytime by purchasing a new one for the retail price. Some carriers allow you to trade in your old phone and receive a discount on a newer model. You’ll need to check with your carrier or your dealer to confirm eligibility.

7. Can I use my existing phone with a new carrier?

Generally you can activate your phone with a new plan providing the technology your phone uses is compatible with the carriers’ technology. Call the carrier or visit a dealer to verify.

8. Can I keep my phone number if I change carriers?

In Canada – YES. Since 2008, Canadian consumers can change service providers within the same local area and still keep the same phone number.

In the United States – YES. The ‘number portability initiative‘ allows consumers to change service providers within the same local area and still keep the same phone number.

9. Can I use my phone across Canada?

Some phones may work across Canada depending on your carrier. Refer to your carrier’s coverage map or ask your dealer for more information.

10. Can I use my phone in the US?

Many Canadian carriers have agreements in the US which will allow you to use your phone there as you would at home. You will likely be required to pay extra roaming and long-distance fees. If you are going to be using your phone a lot in the US, you should look into a flat rate plan. These plans generally include all long-distance and roaming charges. 11. Can I use my phone overseas?

Usually not. The technologies used around the world are generally incompatible although this is slowly changing. Some of the newest GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) phones called ‘world’ or ‘multi-mode’ phones can connect overseas. Check the cellphones.ca phone advisor to see which models are compatible.

12. What is roaming?

Roaming refers to using your phone outside of your home area. In addition to airtime charges, a per minute roaming fee may apply.

13. How do I know if I am roaming?

An indicator light on your phone will illuminate the word ‘roam’.
