1. Is it safe to use my cell phone at a gas station?
Cell phones present a small risk if used in a combustible environment. There is a chance that your phone could create a spark that would ignite a fire or cause an explosion. It is recommended to power off your cell phone when at a gas station.
2. Can using a cell phone cause cancer?
Currently, there is no definitive scientific evidence linking cell phones to cancer or any other disease. Research on the effects of radio frequency emissions continues to be conducted throughout the scientific community.
3. Is it safe to use a cell phone while driving?
Several studies suggest that operating a cell phone while driving increases the odds of being involved in an accident. Drivers should pull over to conduct calls or follow recommended safety practices.
4. What are some recommended safety practices for using a cell phone while driving?
The CTIA (Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association) recommends the following safety practices:
- Place your phone where it is easy to see and easy to read.
- Be familiar with operating your phone so you are more comfortable using it on the road.
- Use the speed dialling feature to program frequently called numbers. This allows you to make calls by touching only a few buttons.
- Never take notes while driving.
- Let voice-mail pick up your calls when it’s inconvenient or unsafe to answer the phone.
- Use a hands-free device.
5. Is it safe to use a cell phone if I have a pacemaker?
Cell phones are generally safe to use if you have a pacemaker, but they can occasionally cause problems. Keep the phone away from your pacemaker and on the opposite side of your body when making calls. Be sure to consult with your doctor before using a phone.
6. Can I use a cell phone with my hearing aid?
Most analog phones are compatible with hearing aids, but digital phones are often not. However, many manufacturers are now making their phones compatible with t coil hearing aids, or offering accessories that make their phones compatible.
7. Why am I asked to shut off my phone when in hospitals, airplanes, construction zones, etc.?
A cell phone is a radio transmitter which could interfere with other electronics. Turn off your phone wherever signs are posted.
8. Can I call 9-1-1 from my cell phone?
You may use any cell phone to call 9-1-1. Even if a phone is not activated with a service contract, carriers are required to transmit emergency calls.
