Samsung’s definitely positioning itself to be more competitive in the market. After announcing that they are indeed cooking up their own homegrown mobile operating system, they’re now letting everyone know that they’re also launching an Application Store soon.

The on-device app store tailor made for Samsung smartphone is scheduled to be launched on September 14th, and will initially become available in the UK, France, and Italy first. Over 30 more countries including Spain and Germany will soon follow thereafter. The US and Canada wasn’t specifically mentioned, but we’re keeping our fingers crossed that they’re part of the second batch. Just like the Apple App Store, Palm App Catalog, and Nokia Ovi Store, the Samsung Application Store will provide Samsung phone users access to a variety of apps ranging from games to e-books and even health-related tools.

Here’s a quote from their press release that clearly shows the optimism they have in their latest venture:

“With the launch of the Application Store, Samsung will increase mobile phone sales and add value for its mobile customers through the availability of carefully selected applications,” declared Hosoo Lee, Executive Vice President of Samsung’s Media Solution Center.

Only two Samsung phones will initially support this new service, namely the Samsung Omnia and i8910 Omnia HD, but will soon roll out to other devices such as the Omnia 2 and the Omnia Lite. More than300 native apps will be available at launch time with a total of over 2,000 apps expected to fill up the store by year’s end. Notable names in the mobile app industry such as Gameloft, Electronic Arts, Handmark, and TAITO are just some of the heavyweights who will be releasing their works in the Samsung Application Store.

Needless to say, with Sasmung’s latest announcement and their big plans for their Application Store, the mobile app market scene has certainly gotten a whole lot more crowded.
