Virgin Mobile Launches in Atlantic Canada

As anticipated, Virgin Mobile has expanded their Canadian service to the provinces of Atlantic Canada today. Residents of Newfoundland, New Brunswick, P.E.I., and Nova Scotia now have Virgin Mobile as an option when they are shopping for a mobile phone.

Virgin’s services are popular with younger consumers because there are no contracts to sign and no monthly service charges. Virgin currently has three different handsets available, the Nokia 6015i, Audiovox 8615, and the Audiovox 8910. These are available at HMV, Future Shop, Indigo-Chapters, Student Phones, Wal-Mart, Zellers, or from Virgin’s website.

Here’s what the PR people had to say:

“Over 650,000 Atlantic Canadians are locked into long-term contracts, are paying hidden fees or extra charges,” said Richard Branson, Virgin Group Chairman and Virgin Mobile Canada founder. “Customers are losing out and they’re paying more than they need to for their mobile phone services. Virgin Mobile will continue the success it’s already experiencing across Canada into the Atlantic provinces by bringing some much-needed simplicity to the market,” added Branson.

“The percentage of Atlantic Canadians with mobile phones is the lowest in the country at just over 30 per cent, and there’s the least amount of competition in the east coast compared to the rest of Canada, which makes this a perfect market for Virgin Mobile,” said Andrew Black, President and CEO of Virgin Mobile Canada.

Yes, Virgin operates in all Canadian provinces except NWT, Nunuvut, and Yukon. Do they have cell phones up there? You’d think the cell waves would freeze.

You can top up your phone 2 ways: Go to any Macs or 7-11 and ask the clerk to top you up. You can choose any amount I believe. You’ll then receive a slip of paper that’ll have an ID number. Go to your MY ACCOUNT in your phone and look for Top up. Follow the directions from there. The second way to Top Up is to go to the MY ACCOUNT, or something alike, on your phone and look for Top Up. You’ll be asked to Top Up by Credit Card or with a number. Of course, choose Credit Card and follow the directions.

    Hi.
Canada is recently recognized as one of the least serviced cell phone-using countries. We are apparently hooked on our land line technology because it works well. Only 33% of Canadians, generally, subscibe to cell phone services: so 30% is pretty much the national average anyway.

Virgin Mobile has changed the length of time on pay as you go to the point where you are becoming a monthly member with no contract. It appears Virgin is not making enough money. Go to Petro-canada for your cell service or 7Eleven Stores if in your area. Much better deals.

I have a pay-as-you-go (top up card) Ontario Virgin Mobile account…. can I use my phone in other Canadian provinces? And what if I plan on travelling to the U.S.? Will it work there or do I have to have a certain plan?
