Samsung creates new memory card for cell phones
Samsung will start to produce a higher capacity thumb-nail sized memory card for cell phones in the first quarter of 2005.

Announced recently, Samsung has already provided undisclosed cell phone makers with the cards to test and presumably design new phones around. The MMCmicro cards are 14mm by 12mm by 1.1 mm in size and have storage capacities of 32MB, 64MB, and 128MB. However, not only is the size a boon to cell phone makers and users. The overall speed has increased 5 times over previous reduced-size multimedia cards (RS-MMCs). RS-MMCs read data at 2.18MBps and write it at 2.08MBps. Samsung’s new MMCmicro cards will read at 10MBps and write at 7 MBps.

So what does this mean in terms of storage capacity? Well, Samsung states that you’ll be able to store up to 60, 5 megapixel digital shots using the 128MB card. I should add that Samsung is the only cell phone manufacturer producing a 5 megapixel camera at the moment, the Samsung SCH-S250, and it’s only available in Korea. If making videos on your cellular phone is your bag, then this same card will hold up to 1 hour of QVGA-resolution (320 pixels by 240 pixels) video.

Samsung Electronics is now attempting on standardizing the new memory card with the Multimedia Card Association.
