Apple prohibiting iPhone Over-the-Air redownload of Free Apps?

iphone-cant-redownloadWe’re not quite sure if this will fully be implemented by Apple, but apparently, the change has already begun. What we’re talking about is how users will no longer be allowed to redownload free apps over the air. To evidence this new policy, the sender of this image received a warning that he is not allowed to download the app (specifically Google Mobile) again on his iPhone, but he can opt to buy it or install it via his computer. So far, it seems that this only affects free apps and is limited to over-the-air downloads (read: downloads through iTunes is safe). Nonetheless, this is such a hassle considering that you really only have so much space on your iPhone 3G for apps. We’re not quite sure what Apple was thinking by coming out with this scheme, but it certainly didn’t put the consumers’ welfare first. The rationale behind this move is totally beyond us.

On the good side, however, Apple hasn’t officially issued a statement regarding this new rule so there might still be some hope that it will be reversed. We’ll report more on this once additional info is made available. How about you guys? Notice anything different with the App Store and over-the-air downloads lately?
