The Garmin-Asus alliance hasn’t even come out with a commercially available product yet, and now, we’re already hearing talk of their plans to release an Android-powered smartphone next year.

garmin-asus-androidAccording to PC World, the Garmin-Asus Android smartphone is expected to be launched not later than Q1 of 2010. However, Jacqueline Yang, associate vice president of marketing for Asustek, notes that it could come a bit earlier. This is the first official announcement expressing the Garmin-Asus alliance’s plans of pursuing an Android-based phone. Garmin, for their part, had made known their intentions late last year, but we weren’t so sure if they had a sudden change of heart due to their merger with Asus. Both Garmin and Asus are part of the Open Handset Alliance.

However, as they have yet to come out with their first announced handset, the nuvifone G60, we’re more than doubtful as to whether they can indeed hold true to the promise of releasing their first Android smartphone before Q1 2010 comes to a close.
