Back in May of 2004, phone manufacturer Kyocera started a recall program to replace up to 40,000 batteries. The recall was issued because the company hired by Kyocera to produce the batteries was also supplying counterfeits that were prone to overheating and have resulted in two minor burn injuries.
Well, it turns out the problem is bigger than first thought. Kyocera has recently announced that they are recalling up to 1 million batteries. If you are an owner of the KE/KX 400 series, 3200 series and Slider series cell phone in the US, you may be getting a letter.

I was recently contacted by a gentleman whose cellphone exploded in his hand on 10/5/04.
This gentelman purchased a Kyocera 7-RAVE prepaid cellphone on 9/25/04 from the Sprint store, 62 Vets Hwy, Commack, with service through Virgin Mobile. On 10/5/04, at 1:30pm, he turned on the phone, which exploded in his hand. He was treated for 1st and 2nd degree burns to his hand, wrist, and abdomen, as well as puncture wounds where the cellphone was embedded in his hand. He is currently experiencing numbness in his pinkie finger from the injuries.
In light of your interest in exploding cellphones, I felt this information should be passed on to you. Luckily, Mr. G did not have the phone to his ear when it exploded.
