Samsung, the second largest mobile phone manufacturer in the world, predicts that smartphones will account for 29% of total mobile phones worldwide in 2012. If you think that’s a small amount, 29% is actually about 500 million phones.

Smartphones today now make up 14% or 170 million of mobile phones in the market which has steadily risen year after year. LG can attest to the popularity of smartphones so the 29% after just 3 years isn’t that far off a target. However, what’s more intriguing is that Samsung also believes that 50% of mobile phones will be touchscreen ones by 2013. We’re not quite sure if this figure is really that accurate, but given that Samsung is currently the leader as far as touchscreen phones are concerned, we’ll take their word for it. Likewise, they also see that OLED displays will be the in thing in the next couple of years, and we certainly with them in this regard.

It’s a very bright future Samsung has painted for us, but as for the here and now, we’re still clueless as to when the first Samsung Android phone will debut which is what we’re more interested to know as opposed to what we can expect in 4 years from now.
