i-mate announces first Windows Mobile 6.5 offerings: Legionnaire, Centurion

Aside from the 810-F tough smartphone, i-mate has just recently announced two more phones which we can look forward to this year. However, unlike the Hummer, these two will come loaded with Microsoft’s latest mobile operating system, Windows Mobile 6.5.

First is the Legionnaire. It’s a touchscreen phone that will be released alongside another i-mate product, the Warrior UMPC. Apart from being a phone, the Legionnaire could fit into the Warrior and act as the touchpad of the said UMPC. Quite a novel idea, but we’ll see if this new approach will prove to be a winning formula for i-mate when it becomes available in Q3 of 2009. The i-mate Legionnaire will retail for $500 while the Warrior UMPC will cost just $199.

The i-mate Centurion is the other phone. It’s a small QWERTY-equipped phone that features a 2-megapixel camera, HSDPA connectivity, GPS and Bluetooth. It doesn’t feature a touchscreen, but its insanely small size (almost the same size as a credit card) will either be its greatest strength or its greatest weakness. This one should become available sometime in the latter half of the year for $550.

We’re not quite sure if the listed release dates are correct since Microsoft estimates that the first set of Windows Mobile 6.5 running devices won’t hit the market until the fourth quarter. Anyway, it’s still pretty early on in the year so we’ll probably get a more definite date once we hit the mid-point of 2009. One thing is certain, these two i-mate phones will surely add some variety the current Windows Mobile line-up available in the market today.
