For the most part, the iPod Touch is considered a stripped down version of the iPhone since it showcases many of the same features and lacks mobile phone functionality. However, with the TruPhone app, you can now make calls and send SMS using the iPod Touch.
It works by placing a VoIP call through a WiFi network. So essentially, you can only make a call if you’re connected to the internet and a headset is attached to your iPod Touch. It won’t work in all situations and places, but nevertheless, this free application will definitely add more value to the iPhones’ humble little twin. Calls made to other TruPhone users and GoogleTalk IM PC users are completely free of charge, but you can also make calls to landlines and other mobile phones with a corresponding charge of course. Unfortunately, this only works with the 2G iPod Touch. For more details, you can check out their website.
There are also versions available for Nokia and BlackBerry phones with iterations for LG, Motorola, Samsung, HTC, and Sony Ericsson coming soon. If you’ve got a 2G iPod Touch and want to try this nifty little app out, you can download it from the App Store. All you’ll have to do now is find a compatible headset to use with your iPod Touch. Sounds simple enough, but believe me, it’s harder than it looks.
