Aptina coming out with HD-video recording capable sensor in 2009

If you think a 12-megapixel camera phone is the biggest thing to watch out for in 2009, you guys are sorely mistaken. Aptina, a Micron division which manufactures mobile phone camera sensors, has announced that an HD-video recording capable camera sensor for mobile phones will go into production in January next year.

The MT9P013 high resolution 5-megapixel sensor will be able to record 720p HD videos at 60fps and 5-megapixel videos at 15fps. It might not be within the same range as the 12-megapixel monsters that Sony Ericsson and Samsung are planning to release in 2009, but it does give video recording aficionados a more viable option.

No word yet on which phones will feature this highly versatile imaging sensor, but it is something we can all expect and look forward to when 2009 finally arrives.
