iPhone Firmware 2.2 now Available for Download

Just as promised, Apple has released iPhone firmware 2.2 to the millions of users all over the world. If iTunes isn’t informing you that it’s available, just click the update button and it’ll promptly ask you if you’re willing to download and install now.

Most of the feature updates we reported earlier are still intact in this official firmware release. Here’s a quick listing of improvements included in firmware 2.2 as listed on the Apple website:

• Enhancements to Maps

  • Google Street View
  • Public transit and walking directions
  • Display address of dropped pins
  • Share location via email

• Decrease in call setup failures and dropped calls
• Enhancements to Mail

  • Resolved isolated issues with scheduled fetching of email
  • Improved formatting of wide HTML email

• Podcasts are now available for download in iTunes application (over Wi-Fi and cellular network)
• Improved stability and performance of Safari
• Improved sound quality of Visual Voicemail messages
• Pressing Home button from any Home screen displays the first Home screen
• Preference to turn on/off auto-correction in Keyboard Settings

It’s a decent line-up of improvements and enhancements, and if you’re not into the jailbreaking thing, I don’t see why you shouldn’t update your current firmware right now. And besides, the iPhone Dev Team already showed us that they’re capable of cracking the beta version of firmware 2.2, so you probably won’t have to wait too long before an appropriate jailbreak is released.
