Aside from Apple making some headway in the global smartphone scene, Samsung has likewise moved up in the standings and has become the no. 1 mobile phone manufacturer in the US.

Despite the economic crisis, Samsung has dethroned Motorola from the top spot, now controlling 22.4% of the market. Motorola lost 11.6%, landing them safely (for now) at the no. 2 spot with 21.1% market share. While Nokia may have an impressive global standing, the Finnish company has never been a great performer in the US, but they've managed to improve on their performance this year earning them 8.4% market share.

Will Motorola’s decision to arm their future handsets with the Android OS save the ailing company from further sinking? This is what we will have to see in 2009.
