RIM Building BlackBerry App Store

Not wanting to be left behind by Apple and Google, RIM has announced that they are setting up their own app store in the form of the BlackBerry Application Storefront and the BlackBerry Application Center.

The Storefront will be launched in March of next year, but they will start accepting apps for review starting in December. Developers will get to set the prices for their apps and they get to keep 80% of revenues. A partnership with PayPal was also revealed as part of RIM’s new endeavor.

The Application Center, on the other hand, is a carrier-customized on-device tool that enables providers to provide specific programs for their customers. Further details are yet to be disclosed so I guess we’ll have to wait until March to see at least the Application Storefront go live. Maybe by then, more details about the Application Center will have been revealed, but let’s hope for the best.

Who knows, maybe Microsoft’s Windows Mobile App Store will launch first. That is, if Microsoft can finish Windows Mobile 7 already.
