While there’s no clear indication that the iPhone is going to have any major updates anytime soon, a recent development concerning Korea and Apple has made us think otherwise on this position. Apple has apparently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with a Korean Telecom that has requested to include WiMAX capabilities for iPods and Macbooks. No mention about the iPhone, but we’re almost certain that if it’s not included now, it will eventually be thrown into the mix. However, it’s still too early to rejoice since there’s no definite roll-out for these WiMAX-enabled devices in Korea and with the absence of any dominant WiMAX networks across the globe, I doubt if Apple will go in to full production with these units.
Personally, I would have appreciated WiFi 802.11n support in future iterations of the iPhone, but hey, WiMAX isn’t so bad just as long as there’s a network available to use it on. With HTC releasing one of their own and Apple rumored to be headed down the same road as well, will this be enough to convince telecoms that they should invest in a WiMAX network?
I guess this is another question of who comes first; the chicken or the egg or in this case, the phones or the network? Hopefully, we won’t have to wait long for this issue to be resolved as technology is progressing at a ridiculous rate that it only takes a couple of years before something new eventually becomes outdated. Who knows, we might even skip out on WiMAX completely if something better suddenly pops up.

With WiMAX you would only need a UMPC with wimax on it and something like Skype to have a WiMAX phone.
