Apple updates iPhone Safari browser in firmware 2.2

It looks like Apple has decided to include the Safari browser in the list of features it’s going to update in firmware 2.2. While I have little to complain about its performance, I must admit that any further enhancements to it will be most welcome. According to the information we were able to gather, the address bar as well as the search box will now always be present, making it a lot easier to change websites and do searches. The refresh button will also be relocated to the inside of the address bar instead of outside.

These are minimal but not insignificant changes, and I do wish they include a desktop and mobile mode as well as cut/copy/paste functionality in future updates. Anyway, maybe we’ll hear more about it in the coming days.

I’m completely shocked people still fall for the iPhone’s Opera Mini-style browser. With Skyfire and Opera 9.5 for WinMo, Nokia’s latest Webkit browser, and Android’s Webkit offering, the so-called high quality browsing experience is suddenly low quality. No Flash or Silverlight put Apples mobile browser well behind the competition.

Apple needs to shut up and give us flash support.

The real issue is we need more tech savvy writers and web journalists. I’m appalled that after the second iPhone’s lameness, reviewers still laud the browser. How is it any different than the free Opera Mini?? And exactly how can a browser that shows less content, zero animations or video, and has no web application capabilities whatsoever be better than one that does all of the above, with Flash to boot? Why don’t we hear these writers laud the Nokia OSS Webkit browser, the real mobile browsing king? It does more, period. The iPhone browser is nothing more than Opera Mini. Free and not enough for the geek establishment.
