We know how long it was when the Open Handset Alliance came into formation and announced the Android mobile OS and the time it took for the first handset, the T-Mobile G1, to be released, but how long exactly has the project been running?
Based on statements made by HTC’s Chief Marketing officer, negotiations with Google started 5 years ago and they’ve been part of the Android team for the past three years. That’s a huge disparity from the 11 month gap from the announcement of the Android OS and the release of the G1. That probably explains the somewhat lackluster design of the hardware, but as gadgets go, the first one usually lays down the groundwork for further improvements. I guess that in itself should be a good sign of things to come as we have yet to hear from the other parties involved in the Open handset Alliance such as Samsung.
