According to a recent study done by the NPD group, BlackBerry-maker RIM still remains as the no. 1 seller of smartphones in the US while Apple has managed to land at 2nd place with Palm at third.
Noticeable out of the top three is HTC. Despite the economic crunch taking its toll on mobile phones sales, the study noted that smartphone sales are up this year. They represent 19% of all mobile phone sales as opposed to the same time last year when they made up only 9% of the market. Smartphone prices have also gone down as the average cost of today’s units is now just $185. That’s 7% lower than last years $199.
That’s a bit of good news for all you smartphone-loving folks out there. More features at a lower cost; and with Apple breaking into the top three, I wouldn’t be surprised if HTC and others try to make a go at it in 2009 by releasing more solid and feature-packed smartphones to rival the highly popular iPhone.
