802.11n hasn’t even penetrated the mobile phone industry and here comes a new WiFi standard that’s just been approved for consumption. 802.11r is the latest wireless standard that’s gotten the seal of approval from the IEEE and promises downtime of less than 50ms when moving from one access point to another. According to our source, and we believe them, that’s good enough to maintain a voice call which makes it pretty interesting for future mobile/VoIP phones.
Will manufacturers completely skip out on 802.11n and hop on the new standard? From a practical stand point, we don’t see why not since it will obviously be backwards compatible and support 802.11n anyway. With this latest development in the wireless industry, this is something we have to look out for when companies roll out their offerings for 2009.
