The Telecommunications Carriers Association said on Thursday the number of mobile phone users in Japan grew 0.6 percent month-on-month in January, confirming slowing growth in the world’s second-largest telecoms market.
The association said the number of mobile users was 67.5 million at end-January, up from 67.1 million in December.
Growth was supported by new offerings such as NTT DoCoMo Inc’s (9437) third-generation (3G) service and KDDI Corp’s (9433) global positioning system (GPS) navigation system.
Top wireless operator NTT DoCoMo continued to outstrip its competitors, adding 260,000 new subscribers to bring its total to 39.9 million. The number of 3G subscribers grew to 43,000 in January, up from 27,000 in December.
