Rogers HTC ShiftEven before they release the iPhone, Rogers will have a mobile game changer for their customers. HTC, maker of Windows Mobile smartphones, presents a breakthrough in user interface: Microsoft Origami(TM) Experience 2.0 via the HTC Shift X9501.

The HTC Shift has a 7-inch touch screen that tilts to reveal a QWERTY keyboard. It has WiFi, triband HSPA and Bluetooth and a front camera for video conferencing. It’s a hard-disk portable, packing 40GB of storage space. Soon HTC will even add TeleNav GPS. This Windows Vista-running UMPC will not come cheap. You can take it home for $1,599.99 for a three year term and a minimum $50 Flex Rate Data Plan.

    Now the question is… will anyone actually be able to afford it? What exactly is a “$50 flex rate data plan”

    I do believe rogers currently considers it’s $65 Tier 1 data plan a “flex rate data plan”

    Cross your fingers for us Canadians… the very existence of those of us that breathe data may indeed be in jeopardy if these high rates continue. Given the option of feed children or data? I’d go with data. Just sayin.
