The 8GB versions of the iPhone and iPod Touch has been sold out and Apple will not longer ship more of them. The 8GB versions of the two devices has reached end-of-life status, at least in the U.K. Apple will now concentrate on higher capacity versions of the device. A new iPhone is also expected to be unveiled in June.
This is official folks, announced by Apple in a short letter. Though, apparently, one cannot buy the 8GB versions online there are some available in stores. I don’t know about you, but I don’t need to be carrying around 16GB of files with me. What do you think? Do you think low-capacity iPhones are irrelevant?
How about us poor Canadians? The British are already discontinuing the iPhone and were still waiting for some news on a Rogers iPhone for Canada.
Update: It seems that Apple was making room for the iPhone with 3G.

Constable Odo says:
Not irrelevant, but I believe the larger capacity iDevices always sell better. I don’t know what type of memory chips Apple uses, but maybe they just plain run out of the lower capacity memory and when it’s gone, that’s it. I think that even a 8GB iPhone is certainly useful, but I personally wouldn’t really want it with only that amount unless I was going to strictly use it as a phone and part-time music player. I’d want a 32GB device to store movies and games and such. I think the offering of a $200 8GB iPhone would be excellent to offer people who didn’t want to spend a lot of money if Apple were to continue to manufacture them in quantity.
Dave says:
While there certainly are people who don’t need 16GB, one quickly realizes the connivence of more storage capacity on this device once they start using it. The iPhone is addictive. I surf, email, copy my entire contacts manager, keep my calendar and more. The more is what counts. I carry dozens of books (an avid audible.com reader) and lots of songs. I have the 16GB and will upgrade the moment a 32GB phone hits the market… especially if it has 3G and GPS!!!
