This is not confirmed and it’s a tad optimistic even for Apple. Gartner analyst Ken Dulaney heard rumors about the number of these 3G iPhones Apple has supposedly ordered from suppliers. If you remember, one reason why Apple did not include 3G in first-gen iPhones is the ability of 3G operation to drain the battery. According to Gartner, Apple has found a way to save battery life on a 3G version of the phone by using OLED instead of LCD. OLED will both be thinner and consume less power.
Frankly, it’s quite surprising that Apple did not choose OLED screens for the iPhones and opted for the more traditional LCD. Ten million 3G phones may look like a chunk of the market that is too huge to swallow, but maybe because the lack of 3G was the often-quoted reason for the lukewarm response for iPhone in Europe gave Apple the idea that it will sell a lot more 3G iPhones.
