wide-angle lens iPhone

The iPhone is a wonderful phone and even after 6 months in the market it has remained unsurpassed in features. One feature that iPhone has it bad compared to other phones in its price range is the camera. A 2 megapixel camera just does hold up well against the 5 megapixel variant that old players like Nokia, Sony Ericsson and Samsung chalk up on a fairly consistent basis.

But few people are going to give up iPhone because of its camera and this is where accessory makers come in. Enter USB Fever, which will be releasing a device that adds a wide-angle feature to your iPhone lens for only $11.99. You can shoot scenic panoramas like a true professional. take the iPhone on a world tour without having to lug around a standalone camera. I can’t wait for someone to try it out and post the pretty pictures.

“The iPhone Gets Wide-Angle Lens”. But does it work? Is it a zoom lens? What view angle(s) does it achieve? What is the quality of the lens? Is it compatible with Apple’s light metering & exposure settings? Has anyone done an independent test? If its such a good idea, why hasn’t Apple marketed it themselves? Is the gadget available in the EU, in the UK, in Sweden etc?

June 2009: I heard that one of the Sony Ericsson mobile camera phones has (or had) a good wide-angle zoom lens installed as standard. Does it have the capacity to save and send such pictures immediately by multimedia message? Does anyone know the details and which model? Are accessories required?
