The XPERIA X1 is definitely the biggest announcement from Sony Ericsson in recent memory. The X1 combines the SideKick slide-out QWERTY design with quadband GSM, 3G, HSDPA, HSUPA connectivity as well as WiFi and aGPS (assisted GPS). The camera onboard is only a 3.2 MP, but even without a truly competitive built-in camera, you can be sure the public is already overawed. This is a multimedia and web browsing phone, a phone that is so unlike the Cyber-Shots and the Walkman Phones we know SE likes to make. This is Nokia territory and it’s moved in with blustering aplomb.

I’ll bet they spent a lot of money designing the hardware for this phone, as well as the fancy app launcher. I wonder if they’ll doom it to failure by including MS Pocket Internet Explorer on it? Or maybe they’re smart enough to bury that and instead make Opera Mobile the default browser? Otherwise, they’re just wasting their time and this thing will just be another iPhone wannabe.
