Purle Magic 3G Linux PhoneNXP Semiconductor and Purple Labs is announcing the cell phone version of the OLPC laptop. Purple Magic is a cheap phone retailing just under $100. It runs on Linux and connects to 3G high-speed wireless. The Purple Magic, unofficially, is the cheapest 3G phone when it becomes available to the public. LG’s KU250, made especially to bring 3G to “everyone” is $25 pricier.

Purple Magic will definitely give 3G a boost, especially in the low-end market. Capable of switching seamlessly between 3G and 2G when no 3G network is available. We’ll see more of this phone during the Mobile World Congress.
