Nokia and Facebook are talking about putting a special Facebook widget on Nokia phones. Like the YouTube button, the Facebook button will give Nokia users a quick way to access Facebook whenever they are connected to the Net. No details of the “button” are available but sources say Nokia may also buy a stake in Facebook while Facebook logos will be displayed on Nokia displays. It looks like it’s almost a merger between the two companies.
A senior Nokia exec has this to say: “There is talk of a partnership in the works… it’s safe to say we’re testing the waters and things still have to be worked out.”
It’s clear why Facebook would want a partnership with the world’s biggest cellphone manufacturer. With a number of social networking sites old and newly minted competing against it, a partnership with a ubiquitous brand will go a long way in consolidating its market position. To Nokia it can mean an expansion into Web 2.0 and possibly Web 3.0.
