Manufacturers of digital cameras will feel the effect of the ever-growing popularity of camera phones for the first time this year. Market research agency Mintel says that consumers have had it with digital cameras and will result into a dip in sales from £951 million to £890 million. Camera phones are the main culprit.
Andrew Harrison, Carphone’s head of UK, said: “The digital stills camera is a disappearing breed, in particular at the lower end of the market. A sentiment echoed by Fevzi Turkalp, founder of the GadgetDetective.com: “In this country, because you are going to get the phone as part of a contract, you are in effect paying nothing at all for the camera. Why would you go and buy a £100 camera that does the same job, more or less?”
Nokia, the biggest cameraphone manufacturer, is the leading beneficiary of the downward trend of the camera market. According to Mintel a third of mobile phone owners have a built-in camera in their handset.
