Disney is not giving up on its handset-manufacturing business. They have ceased selling phones in North America, but that doesn’t mean Mickey can’t sell hi-tech hardware. In 2008, Disney will begin selling Disney phones in Japan in a partnership with Softbank.
The partnership will include new cellphone models and content from Disney. Softbank is Japan’s third operator behind KDDI and DoCoMo. Softbank expects to attract a younger crowd and even some from the fashionable set with the new Disney phones. Disney went into the mobile market beginning with ESPN and then Disney Mobile, an MVNO company. Both have succumbed for lack of market interest.
