Nokia has launched its Music Store. If you’re using an N95 or have bought a shiny new N81, you can begin downloading songs at 80p a piece or £8 an album from Nokia’s online store. You will also need to be using a PC running Windows XP or Vista and have Internet Explorer 6 installed. Nokia is limiting the demographics of the Music Store but we’re sure more browser support will be added soon.
Meanwhile, Vodafone will use streaming and a flat fee of £1.99 a week. Vodafone’s MusicStation sound more like Internet radio than an iTunes Killer, but you can get your music directly to your phone and it should work in most phones available through Vodafone.
We’re curious about the effect of the Nokia Music Store more than Vodafone’s service on iTunes sales. Nokia has partnered with Microsoft to provide the DRM software and we’ll be interested to know if this will prevent users from going to iTunes and how many iTunes with Nokia phones users will avail of the service.
