Samsung has developed a fuel cell that racts to oxygen instead of methanol like other fuel cells. This fuel cell may be powering cell phones by 2010. When the handset is turned on, metal and water in the phone react to produce hydrogen gas,” says Oh Yong-soo, vice president of Samsung Electro-Mechanics’ research center. “The gas is then supplied to the fuel cell where it reacts with oxygen in the air to generate power.”
The fuel cells last ten hours. They are recharged using hydrogen cartridges, which can get costly. Samsung hopes to develop cartridges that do not need to be replaced, which would be cheaper.
