Hazards of receiving Email in Your iPhone

apple iphone cellEmailing using your handset is a way of life for business users (not just CrackBerries) and, increasingly, most tech savvy people. It’s not a problem for U.S. wireless customers since most cellphone plans include unlimited data. But what if you “accidentally” for got about overseas data billing? What if you made a short trip to Europe and forgot that your iPhone stores receives e-mails and stores them even when it is turned off.

This is what happened to an American family with three iPhones between them and nine e-mail accounts. They went on a cruise tour of the Mediterranean and unbeknownst to them racked up data charges amounting to almost $5,000.

Jay Levy and his family were not alone. Herbert Kliegerman, who works as a real estate agent in New York, got a $2,000 data charge when he visited Mexico. The main problem is that many people didn’t think the iPhone data transfer would work abroad. This is another area Apple may have to address next.
