A Queen’s University study points to the sun as the culprit for interrupted cellular calls. There is a correlation between the occurrence of solar flares and dropped calls in 9 to 20 percent of the cases, says the study.
“We believe that this is caused by the Sun radiating energy into the Earth’s magnetic field,” says Dr. David Thomson of Queen’s University in Ontario Canada, “It’s one of those things that people look at and say, ‘It can’t possibly be,’ but a lot of experts have now given a thumbs-up to this theory.”
The study will be published in the next edition of Proceedings of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers or IEEE.
While 9 per cent is small enough, 20 per cent might give wireless operators a big enough scapegoat for their poor services.
