Steve just announced that Apple will be giving an 8GB iPhone to each of its over 17,000 employees, which amounts to an over $10 million dollars giveaway by Apple. The bad news is, Apple employees would have to wait for the last week of July. Still $10 million dollars is very generous of Apple, which just a $1.38% rise in its stock today at the first day of iPhone's availability.

Today, Jobs also explained why the iPhone is not a 3G device. Officially, Apple wanted to save battery life and keep the iPhone slim.

Edge is good enough, but you wish it was a little faster and that's where sandwiching Edge with Wi-Fi really makes sense because Wi-Fi is much faster than any 3G network.

But Jobs hinted towards 3G becoming standard in future iPhone versions. The EDGE connectivity on the current iPhone, Jobs said, is good enough for email, maps, etc.

On a related news, AT&T customers have observed a boost in EDGE speed of up to 200Kbps.
