Nokia and the Bluetooth Special Interest Group have announced that the low-power short range Wibree data transmission protocol developed by Nokia has been selected as an extension to Bluetooth standards along with the acquisition and merging of the WiBree Forum.
It took quite a long time to develop the standard: the work was started in 2001 by Nokia and it will be integrated into the Bluetooth protocol in 2008. Wibree may also operate as a standalone protocol, ultra low battery drain making its main advantage. Specialists expect it’ll become a first choice for low power personal area networks. Wibree is even more welcome in the current environment, where not only PC’s and mobile phones, but also smaller devices such as watches, medical devices and access control systems are powered with expanded Bluetooth PAN options.
However, there is no clear announcement what exactly Nokia models will support this protocol.
