From China: a 5 Megapixel Camera Phone

5mp chinese camera phone

How difficult is it to cram a 5 megapixel camera on board a reasonably slim mobile phone? For the Chinese it’s pretty darned simple. It took Nokia a few years perfecting the practice of cramming in as many high-end features as possible inside a cell phone, but, apparently, there is a much faster way to do it… imitation. The Chinese just happen to be the best in the world at the art of imitation.

This unnamed Chinese phone above has an iPhone-like 3-inch QVGA touch screen with 26k colors and supports GPRS, SMS, MMS, Voice Mail, as well as MP3 ringtones as well as TV-Out. It’s a dual-band phone (GSM 900 / DCS 1800), plays MP3, 3GP and MP4. But besides the big touchscreen, what distinguishes this phone from others coming out of China is the 5MP camera with autofocus it has packing round back. Except for the Nokia N95, 5MP are virtually unheard of in the West. There doesn’t seem to be a flash in evidence but 5 megapixel is 5 megapixel and for the suggested retail price of $280, it’s definitely worth a try, although it’s virtually impossible to operate this in the U.S. with Stateside GSM networks operating in the 850MHz and 1900MHz bands.
